Let it also be said that Whiteheart was not consulted in any way on the release of the Home Sweet Home albums, nor did they approve their release. It seems that a new compilation album (or release of an older album) comes out almost every year now. Therefore, the list below is possibly not current as you read this. Here is a letter from Billy Smiley concerning these releases reprinted from the April 96 CCM Magazine "As an artist, I want readers to know that 90 percent of the time the artist has no control over 'best of' compilations, and as in the case of Whiteheart, frankly I am embarrassed every time another such project comes out. We recorded three albums with Home Sweet Home Records. Since that time they have put out four 'Best Of' albums plus a 'live mono album' (if you could call it that) with the only difference being a different song sequence and different album cover artwork. We recorded three more albums with Sparrow Records, and I felt they had good sensitivity and integrity as they waited a year and put out one 'Best Of' album compiled from those three albums. We recorded an additional three albums for Star Song Communications. When we left Star Song in 1994, together with them we put together a rockumentary 'Best Of' project called, Nothing But the Best--Radio & Rock, a two CD collection that had four additional new songs and showcased our best songs from 1986-1994. This was the very first time we were involved with a 'Best Of,' and I was excited because I felt our listeners and fans would finally receive a Whiteheart 'Best Of' that was a true representation of what God had taken us through during those years. But again to my dismay--only 10 months after Nothing but the Best, Star Song put out another 'Best Of' called Attack!! ,with an exact duplication of 10 of the same songs from Nothing But the Best. Now, I know it's hard to believe, but only six months after Attack!!, Star Song has released yet another compilation album called Whiteheart, The Early Years. Again eight out of the 10 songs are the same as on the Nothing But the Best compilation. I know we might be somewhat popular, but I wonder if even The Beatles have as many compilations as we do! All this to say, I personally don't support this kind of action. It feels exploitive, but there isn't anything that the artist can do in this situation except to let the record company know our feelings on the matter (which is what we did). The next step is to trust and pray that artists, managers, booking agents, sales representatives and record companies would continue the chain with Godly principles and honor as it deals with business practices so that you, the consumer, aren't being taken advantage of. For the most part, I believe this happens in our industry, but sometimes it doesn't. Thank you for your time and attention concerning this important area of music." A) A detailed answer is given in a recent letter from Rick Florian available online at: Editor's Note: Whiteheart has indeed reformed. See contact info at the end of this document. Q) I've seen three different spellings - "White Heart", "WhiteHeart", and "Whiteheart". Which one is right? A) Actually all are correct (depending on which album you're looking at), but the official current spelling is "Whiteheart". Q) Where did you come up with the name Whiteheart? A) Whiteheart's first lead singer, Steve Green, saw a Joan Jett and the Blackhearts video and thought they should have the opposite representation, and came up with Whiteheart. Q) Now that Whiteheart has signed with a secular record label, are they going to quit playing Christian music? A) Whiteheart will continue to minister with their music, however they feel that there is a need to expand their ministry. Curb Records will provide the means (and the finances) to break the barriers that still restrict Christian labels and markets. (After all, isn't that what Jesus wants us to do. To go into *all* the world, not just the Christian world.) Q) Whatever happened to Rick Florian's vocal problems and the fact that everyone wanted to settle down. A) In a August '92 CCM article on Whiteheart, Rick said in an interview that he "could quit tomorrow and it wouldn't bother me". Notice he said *COULD* quit. He did not at any point in the article say or suggest he was *GOING* to quit. He was merely commenting on the fact that his ministry was in God's hands, and that he concentrated on that fact instead of getting caught up in the music (like some are prone to do). As for vocal problems, Rick is very protective of his voice for good reasons. [ed. note - Any time I've ever visited with Rick at a concert, he is always very careful not to get carried away with talking too much.] At present there are no vocal problems, and no plans for breaking up. Q) Why is Rick's name spelled differently on every album? A) This started off as an innocent "stage name" kind of a thing on Don't Wait For The Movie. Rick (Ric, Rikk, Riq, Ricke, Rhic, Rikcq) Florian actually has had no part; and it has taken on a life of it's own. Q) Whiteheart has gone through a lot of personnel changes. Are there any original members left? A) Mark Gersmehl and Billy Smiley are the only original band members left. Also Mark and Billy remain the dominant songwriters. Q) So what are the former members up to now? A) See section - #6) What Are They Up To Now? Q) Is David Huff the same David Huff from David and the Giants? A) There has been much confusion on this issue. David Huff, formerly of Whiteheart, and David Huff of David and the Giants are not the same person; there is no relation. Q) Will there ever be a Whiteheart reunion? A) There is not one in the works, however, there have been reunions of a sort. Chris, Gordon, and Tommy have played as a rhythm section on several cuts from David Meece's, LEARNING TO TRUST; Carolyn Arends', I CAN HEAR YOU; and Kim Hill's TALK ABOUT LIFE and BRAVE HEART, and now on Garth Brook's latest CHRIS GAINES project (including writing most of the music.) Also Dann, David, and Gary all played on Michael W Smith's THE BIG PICTURE. updated 17 Nov 2002-- NEVERLOST by Billy Smiley includes several Whiteheart alumni Q) I've seen other albums not listed in the Album History. What's up with that? A) See section - #3) Unofficial Whiteheart Albums Q) How do I get a hold of the first three Whiteheart albums? A) Those are now available as a re-releases from Home Sweet Home Records . Q) On HIGHLANDS, there is a Road Manager credit listed as Wally John Thorne. Is this the same person as current bass player, John Thorn? A) Yes. Q) Is the child on the cover of Tales Of Wonder one of band member's children? A) No. He was the son of a friend of a friend of the video guy (or something like that). Q) Who is Kerry in "Excuse Me, Forgive Me" on HIGHLANDS? A) Confidential. Q) Has Whiteheart ever been awarded any Gold albums or Dove Awards? A) No. Q) How come? A) That's a good question. Q) What are some "name" CCM artists who have opened for Whiteheart? A) D.C. Talk, Newsboys (did their first big concert in Brisbane, Australia), Hoi Polloi, Steven Curtis Chapman, Geoff Moore, Margaret Becker, and others. Q) Did I see Kevin Mills (former bass player for Newsboys) at a Whiteheart concert lately? A) Yes, Kevin was the road manager in 1995-1996. Sadly, Kevin was killed in a motorcycle accident in Los Angeles on Dec 3, 2000. Q) What did Rick do before joining the band? A) Rick got a degree in Biology from Taylor University, and taught school. Then later as a roadie for Whiteheart, got an audition to replace Scott, and got the job. (See Personnel History) =========================== 6) What Are They Up To Now? =========================== The following is an attempt to follow the careers of former Whiteheart members using partial lists of artists and albums to which they have contributed, not to mention solo albums. * Steve Green * Steve has forged a very successful career in the inspirational Christian music field. His most recent solo album WHERE MERCY BEGINS was a Dove Award nominee for Inspirational Album Of The Year, and he also participated in CORAM DEO II which won the '95 Dove Award for Prayer and Praise Album Of The Year. Being at "praise and worship" at Smitty's right before Thanksgiving and seeing Scott Mathiesen (sp?) and his wife, Jovon (sp?). Vintage White Heart fans might remember Scott by his stage name "Scott Douglas". He has been released from prison and is home with his family putting life back together one day at a time. What a Thanksgiving! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [end clip from Amy Grant Mailing List] * Gary Lunn * Gary has been very involved in moslty prayer and praise recordings and worship projects. Right after leaving Whiteheart, Tommy did some touring with Bruce Springsteen. In Feb 1997, Tommy (along with Gordon and Wayne Kirkpatrick) won a Song Of The Year Grammy Award for "Change Your World" recorded by Eric Clapton. At this writing Tommy is involved in the Chris Gaines project by Garth Brooks - also along with Gordon and Wayne - and including Chris McHugh and Jimmy Lee Sloas, and others from the CCM world. * Chris McHugh * Chris has toured with Amy Grant and is also producing. The rhythm section from Amy's House of Love Tour were all involved in the Will Owsley's most recent awesome power pop project titled OWSLEY. Chris played drums and produced.
